No, I'm not taking about the Devo song, I'm talking about the movie, "Whip It" that I saw tonight.
This movie is about, of all things, a Roller Derby league in Austin , Texas. It is the first movie directed by Drew Barrymore and stars Ellen Page (Juno) and a crazy collection of a cast. It is a hard movie to pin down because it is not typical Hollywood film. It actually shows Texas and the middle class in a real way. The star plays a high school girl who has been dragged to beauty pageants all her life by a domineering mother. She secretly breaks away into the rough world of roller derby. There is good humor, slice of life, and a good story. It is a good alternative to a lot of the fluff out there today.
