The Intern

Remember the movie called "The Internship" starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn?  

Well, "The Intern" is much much better than that.  It is the movie they thought they were making.

The Intern stars Robert DeNiro and Ann Hathaway.  No they didn't just mail it in for a average comedy.  These two actors did a brilliant job and capturing today's Business climate and showing the generational differences and traits. It is Old School/New School. It is also thoughtful and thought provoking. It is how families' deal with work, love, guilt and getting ahead.

Ann Hathaway is the founder of an E fashion business that has grown from 4 to 250 people in two years. It showing growing pains. The new HR department thinks it would be good to have a "Senior" intern program where retirement age people get to intern with the young go-getters. Enter DeNiro.

His role its been said maybe the nicest, most thoughtful and sensitive people ever portrayed.

This movie is both thoughtful and fun.  I saw many of our collective personalities in this. Not typical Hollywood. PG-13 (one F-bomb). Two of my favorite actors.

I give it a rare **** for a simple comedy.

Uneasy Treat - Grandma

So-I was checking for new movies and saw that "Grandma" starring Lily Tomlin got a 91 rating by Rotten Tomatoes.  I read the basic story which said that the "Grandma" character was a sarcastic former professor who was dealing with her daughter and grand daughter.  The story was about a day when the grand daughter needs $600 dollar by the end of the day (A day in the life of......)

Great ratings.

So we went.  Right off the bat I realized that I was over my head. Grandma is a lesbian! And the $600 dollars is for an abortion! YIKES!  I said to myself: Had I known this I would have gone to Everest.

I'm glad I saw this.  This story shows the raw unfiltered lives of a very dysfunctional family. Grandma has to go to various people who were part of her life. We also sees her bad relationship with her controlling daughter (Marcia Gay Harden).  We also meet Grandma's one time boy friend (Sam Elliot) and the rest.  The story is tremendous.  Even the idea of abortion is shown pro and con and deals with the lasting effects on one's life.  Nothing is gloried in this movie just life.

It is R for language.

I would not recommend that Republicans see this!

I do think that Christians might get a good message.

The trouble with criticism

I have been writing a really good blog post about how much Christianity has "jumped the track" and then I realized I was describing ME as well.  I erased it. I will say that you and I are spending to much of our time discussing things that do not matter in the Kingdom of the LORD.

Take A Walk in the Woods

"A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson is one of my all time favorite books.  The humor, the travel, the stories are all great.  Naturally I have been excited to see the movie of the same name. Robert Redford plays Bill and Nick Nolte plays Katz, an old friend from his high school days. They embark on a plan to hike the Appalachian Trail (all 2,200 miles of it)!  It is the ultimate buddy story as they traverse the trail meeting all sorts of characters and bears.  There are no characters as strange as Katz though.  The movie follows the books with some license. After all it is hard to put all the happenings into a two hour movie especially when the story is true. Totally Enjoyable.  The supporting cast includes Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, Nick Offerman, and Kristen Schaal.

The movie is more "R" than the book with many F bombs thrown in.  I missed hearing Bill Bryson tell the story, but the books humor still comes through.  It is weird that the movie was full of Boomers and no one else!
